Aims: In 2007 the IARC/WHO ranked shiftwork that involves circadian disruption as probably human carcinogen. This evaluation was based mainly on animal studies. The main objective of the project is study that occupational exposures, nutrition and related disruption of circadian rhythms are associated with risk of breast cancer and prostate, considering genetic susceptibility.

Methodology: The project is part of multicenter population epidemiological study MCC-Spain (www.mccspain.org). The MCC study includes approximately 1500 cases of breast cancer, prostate 1000 and 2500 controls. The participants completed a computerized interview on sociodemographic factors, including occupation shift night, environmental exposures, diet, medication, lifestyle, alcohol, previous diseases, physical activity patterns  of sleep. We collected blood samples in 95% of subjects. There will be a detailed analysis of shift work  and night shift. The cases in 14 hospitals and controls (> 80% of the study) will be interviewed twice by phone to assess the distribution over 24 hours a day with exposure, a type of information that has not been collected so far. It will be genotiped genes from different biological processes related to rate regulation circadian melatonin production. We will analyze data using statistical methods. This is the first

epidemiological study to assess the relevance of circadian disruption in the broader context of the risk of cancer in humans.
