ISGlobal Ranked Among the Top Policy Think Tanks in the Field of Global Health

The Barcelona Institute for Global Health has been included for the first time in the list prepared every year by the University of Pennsylvania

10.02.2016

Just over five years after its foundation, the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) has carved out a place among the world’s highest ranked global health policy think tanks.  ISGlobal’s position as a preeminent think tank has been confirmed by the inclusion of the institute in the  Global Go To Think Tank Index drawn up annually by the University of Pennsylvania’s Lauder Institute.

As the only world ranking of its kind, the Global Go to Think Tank Index is the tool of reference for measuring the influence of policy think tanks. The list is prepared every year on the basis of a survey of 7,500 scholars, public and private donors, policy makers and journalists.

Using this methodology, the Global Go To Think Tank panel assesses more than 6,600 think tanks on the basis of a set of 28 criteria developed specifically for this purpose.  Based on the results of the assessment, lists are drawn up of the top think tanks in each category. The 2015 index ranks ISGlobal fifteenth in the Global Health Policy category, just ahead of the Centre on Global Health Security at Chatham House.

The  Policy and Global Development department, which is responsible for ISGlobal’s public policy research analysis, is one of the pillars of the institute’s model. The need for policy analysis was one of the main reasons that led the "la Caixa" Foundation and the other founding partners to create a global health institute in Barcelona. Policy and Global Development, together with the Training department, is responsible for the transfer to society of the knowledge generated by research and for ensuring that such knowledge is translated into policies that will guarantee its application and realise its transformational potential.

Among the most important areas of the work of the Policy and Global Development department today are the study of the mechanisms involved in pharmaceutical innovation and access to medicines, the promotion of equity in the Sustainable Development Goals, and the relationship between migration and health.
