Amadeo Sena-Torralba is a postdoctoral researcher in Prof. Muñoz’s group at ISGlobal. He is a biotechnologist specializing in nanobiosensing after performing his PhD in Prof. Merkoçi’s group at ICN2. After three years as a Ph.D. candidate and almost five years as a postdoctoral researcher in Prof. Maquieira's group, he has obtained a strong background experience in bioanalytical chemistry, particularly in developing paper-based biosensors with applicability at the point of care.

His Ph.D. studies have been awarded twice by the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Special Award for Doctoral Studies) and the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry and Physics (Award to the best Ph.D. thesis in Colloids Sciences and Interfaces). Later, as a postdoctoral researcher, he won the most prestigious European fellowship for junior researchers (MSCA-IF 2024), two of the most competitive Spanish fellowships (Juan de la Cierva and Margarita Salas), and the most competitive fellowship from the Valencian Community (CIAPOS) for young researchers. Amadeo is now performing the outgoing phase of the Marie Curie fellowship at Prof. Milan Stojanovic’s group at Columbia University, where he is developing highly sensitive and stable aptamers for the diagnosis and prognosis of Malaria disease using Lateral Flow Assay.

Lines of research

  • The design, development, optimization, and characterization of DNA aptamers specific to the four biomarkers of Malaria disease.
  • The integration of aptamers into a multiplexed Lateral Flow Assay.
  • The optimization, analytical characterization, and validation of the detection method with clinical samples from infected travelers with malaria with different disease severity.
