World Antibiotic Awareness Week: How do We Fight the Battle?

17.11.2016

ISGlobal has joined the World Antibiotic Awareness Week. Bacterial resistance to antimicrobial drugs is a serious problem that threatens our ability to treat infectious diseases and poses a serious risk to the progress made in global health in the past decades.

Bacterial resistance to antimicrobial drugs poses a serious risk to the progress made in global health in the past decades

Salmonellosis and TB are among the growing list of diseases that are becoming increasingly difficult to treat due to the problem of antibiotic resistance. We need new antibiotics and we need them fast. However, the antibiotic development pipeline in the major pharmaceutical companies has all but dried up.

Out of eight antibiotics approved by the Food and Drug Admiistration (FDA) in the last six years, most do not have new mechanisms of action or are simply combinations of existing antibiotics. It is as if in the 21st century we used bayonets to combat an army equipped with guided missiles.

We invite you to read the report 'The 4 Battlefronts against Antibiotic Resistance'

To learn more on what is being done in the war against drug-resistant bacteria, we invite you to read the report “The 4 Battlefronts against Antibiotic Resistance”,   by the Antibiotic Resistance Initiative ISGlobal team. Throughout the World Awareness Week we will publish a different chapter every day, corresponding to each of these battlefronts. Happy reading!
