RESONATE will bring together a consortium of world leaders in nature-based therapy (NbT) research, practice, policy, and innovation with stakeholders in the health, environmental, economic, and societal sectors to
- Build a stronger causal evidence base of the links between nature, health, and well-being by demonstrating nature’s biopsychosocial resilience-building capacities
- Demonstrate how multi-sectoral stakeholders can collaborate to implement locally acceptable and inclusive NbTs
- Increase awareness and acceptance of these benefits among the public, multi-sectoral stakeholders, and policymakers
- Ensure wider utilisation of cost-effective NbTs, to help build more resilient individuals and communities in urban, rural, and coastal settings.
Recent research explores nature-based therapies, such as 'nature-based social prescribing', 'green prescriptions' and 'green care', highlighting their health benefits. The project's mission is to bring together experts in this field, such as researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and innovators, from different sectors such as health, environment, economy, and society.
What are the objectives?
- To provide evidence that demonstrates how nature can improve health and well-being.
- To bring together health professionals, nature managers and local communities to develop nature-based therapies that are suitable for all.
- Increase awareness and acceptance of nature-based therapies among society, the health sector, and governments.
- Ensure wider use of cost-effective nature-based therapies, e.g., by providing guidelines and policy briefs.
What's taking place in Barcelona?
The Barcelona Institute for Global Health will lead a novel study to link people with metabolic syndrome to a nature-based therapy in two coastal areas of the region: the Barcelona and Badalona maritime coastlines. Together with the help of local health professionals, we will recruit 140 residents with metabolic syndrome to participate in a five-week study that will include guided and self-guided nature walks along Barcelona's coastal areas. Participants will have the opportunity to be physically active, spend more time outdoors and learn about meditation and mindfulness.
Expected results
-
Adoption of a holistic approach to address healthy, active and mindful lifestyles through outdoor time, meditation and mindfulness.
-
Improved quality of life.
-
Reduced risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and other conditions associated with metabolic syndrome.
Do you want to participate?
Do you enjoy walking in nature and want to improve your physical and emotional wellbeing? Take part in our study and help us implement nature-based therapy in an urban coastal environment. At the end of the study you will receive a free heart rate monitor.
What are we looking for?
Adults approximately 40-65 years of age with metabolic syndrome or three of these factors: high triglycerides, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high waist and hip diameter, low HDL cholesterol. Who do little or no physical activity and have the autonomy to do low to moderate levels of physical activity.
What do I have to do as a participant?
Participants will have to take part in three one-hour guided and self-guided walks per week for five weeks in the coastal areas of Barcelona and/or Badalona. They must also answer questions on a mobile app at the end of each walk, undergo a physical assessment and complete a questionnaire before and after the five weeks of walking.
