RESONATE will bring together a consortium of world leaders in nature-based therapy (NBRT) research, practice, policy and innovation with stakeholders from the health, environmental, economic and social sectors to:
- Build a stronger causal evidence base for the links between nature, health and well-being by demonstrating the biopsychosocial resilience capacities of nature.Demonstrate how multi-sectoral stakeholders can work together to implement locally acceptable and inclusive CBNR.
- Raise awareness and acceptance of these benefits among the public, multi-sectoral stakeholders and policy makers.
- Ensure wider use of cost-effective CBNR to build more resilient individuals and communities in urban, rural and coastal areas.
Recent research explores nature-based therapies, such as 'nature-based social prescribing', 'green prescribing' and 'green care', and highlights their health benefits. The project aims to bring together experts in the field such as researchers, practitioners, policy makers and innovators from different sectors such as health, environment, business and society.
What are the objectives?
- Provide evidence of how nature can improve health and well-being.
- Bring together health professionals, nature managers and local communities to develop nature-based therapies that work for everyone.
- Increase awareness and acceptance of nature-based therapies in society, the health sector and governments.
- Ensure wider use of cost-effective nature-based therapies, e.g. by providing guidelines and policy briefs.
What's taking place in Barcelona?
The Barcelona Institute for Global Health will lead a novel study to link people with metabolic syndrome to nature-based therapy in two coastal areas of the region: the Barcelona and Badalona coasts. With the help of local health professionals, we will recruit 140 local residents to take part in a five-week study involving guided and self-guided nature walks along the Barcelona and Badalona coastlines. Participants will have the opportunity to spend more time outdoors, participate in group activities and be physically active.
Expected results
-
A holistic approach to a healthy, active and mindful lifestyle through time spent outdoors and mindfulness.
-
Improved quality of life and reduced stress levels.
-
Reduced risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and other conditions.
Do you want to participate?
Do you enjoy walking in nature and want to improve your physical and emotional wellbeing and stress levels? Take part in our study and help us implement nature-based therapy in an urban coastal environment. At the end of the study you will receive a free heart rate monitor.
Who are we looking for?
Adults aged 40-70 years with high blood pressure who are able to take part in low to moderate physical activity.
What do I have to do as a participant?
Participants must take part in three one-hour guided and self-guided walks per week for five weeks in the coastal areas of Barcelona and/or Badalona. They will also have to answer questions on a mobile app at the end of each walk, undergo a physical assessment and complete a questionnaire before and after the five weeks of walking.
