MESA to Fund Four New Malaria Eradication Projects

The four operational research projects will begin in April

02.04.2014

The Malaria Eradication Scientific Alliance (MESA) has completed the grant award process started on 11 December 2013 with the selection of four new projects to receive funding. The projects chosen will contribute to MESA's objective of catalysing the research needed to achieve malaria eradication.

The new operational research projects starting this April will focus on malaria elimination. MESA's operational research portfolio, which encompasses urban, rural and forest environments, includes:

- New tools for vector control and diagnosis

- Use of mapping technologies for surveillance and tailored response

- Mobile applications for populations living in areas with poor access

In all cases, the projects are characterised by strong relationships between the stakeholders in the area under study and researchers. The research topics chosen will generate information directly related to the programmes of the participating countries.

The MESA Call for Proposals was informed by the operational research priorities identified and agreed through the World Health Organisation's Global Malaria Programme. The four projects that will receive funding were selected by an independent panel of peer reviewers made up of 12 leading experts, who evaluated in depth the 91 proposals submitted.

The review process is explained in this figure.

Abstracts of the projects selected can be seen here.
