Over the last century, humanity has made great strides in improving the health and well-being of society. However, globally, these advances have been uneven and have been achieved through the overexploitation of natural resources at an unprecedented rate. We have entered a new era called the Anthropocene, characterized, among other changes, by global warming and the increasing extinction of species. These changes pose an unprecedented challenge for the future of humanity.
In this context, Planetary Health is emerging as a new scientific and professional field aimed at promoting profound changes in our societies to continue to improve the health of humanity within the sustainable limits of the planet, in a just and equitable society. Areas of action for Planetary Health include: food production and consumption within environmental limits, integrated land use solutions, co-benefits for health and the environment, rational management of chemicals, sustainable cities, or the integration of environmental services with health systems, following the path outlined by the Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals.
As the call for action at the Nobel Prize summit recently noted, "global sustainability offers the only viable path to human security, equity, health and progress." That is why the Open University of Catalonia (UOC, coordinator), Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and the Barcelona Institute of Global Health (ISGlobal) offer, in an online modality, this Interuniversity and Multidisciplinary Master in Planetary Health.
