Since July 16 to 19, the Institut Pasteur de Côte d’Ivoire (IPCI) hosted the second capacity building workshop for francophone researchers from African countries. The aim of the activity, funded by the European and Developing Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), is to strengthen the researchers’ capacities in the preparation and writing of scientific proposals through a training mostly based on practical sessions.

“This type of training is essential to motivate researchers at different stages in their career to apply for grants provided by funders such as EDCTP,” explains Núria Casamitjana, Training Director at ISGlobal and co-organiser of the workshop. She, Sarah Davoren from the Global Development Department and the ICREA Research Professor Quique Bassat built the ISGlobal team which travelled to Abidjan, on the south-east coast of Côte d’Ivoire, on the Gulf of Guinea, in order to deliver this three-day training course.

Together with researchers from the IPCI and the Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques (CSRS) shared experiences, presented EDCTP criteria and evaluation mechanisms and held practical writing sessions with over 40 participants from 15 African countries (Ivory Coast, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal).

During the practical working sessions, the trainees had the opportunity to prepare proposals that were evaluated by the working groups and the trainers.

Next workshop, in Barcelona

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon) and the “la Caixa” Foundation are organising, with the collaboration of ISGlobal and the Manhiça Health Research Centre (CISM), another workshop on management of scientific projects in limited-resource settings. It is intended for researchers from Portuguese-speaking African countries and will take place in Barcelona, on September 10-14, 2018.
