This course gives a basic overview of how qualitative research methods can be used for the development, implementation and evaluation of interventions in the field of global health. From theoretical perspectives to practical and operational aspects, we will embark on a well-rounded learning experience starting from the design and the elaboration of research questions to qualitative research analysis and dissemination of findings.
Applications
This course is aimed at professionals from all disciplines and areas, who wish to immerse in the Fundamentals of Qualitative Research in Global Health.
Methodology and assessment
- The course methodology includes case examples, individual exercises and collaborative group work and discussions based on readings and content provided during the course.
- The learning itinerary follows an established calendar of assignments that can be completed asynchronously.
- Student-faculty interaction will take place on weekly interactive live sessions, online forum discussions and direct messaging.
- Course work and activities can be completed in a flexible way that accommodates to participants' schedules.

1. Overview and set-up of Qualitative Research
- Qualitative research in global health: role and utility.
- The qualitative lens: main principles and characteristics
- Overview of the main theoretical theoretical frameworks, methodological approaches and study designs in qualitative research: Ethnography, Phenomenology, grounded theory, framework analysis, thematic approach, participatory action research, consensus methods, qualitative rapid assessments, among others.
- Potential phenomena of interest in social and health research
- Qualitative and quantitative complementary approaches
- Research questions and objectives in a qualitative study
2. Methods & tools of Qualitative Research
- Operationalization of qualitative research.
- Study population, location and sampling -Convenience sampling, purposive, snowball, theoretical sampling-. Logistics and other considerations.
- Ethical issues related to qualitative research methodology
- Data collection methods: In-depth Interviews, Focus Group Discussions, Observations, PhotoVoice, Life stories, Mapping, Informal conversations, Journals, Note taking, Observation grids.
- Data management: Organization of notes, recordings, transcriptions, spreadsheets, summary report. Manual and software data organization for analysis.
3. Analysis and Translation of Qualitative Research
- Main analysis approaches: Grounded theory, framework analysis, thematic narrative/content analysis
- Quality and trustworthiness in qualitative research
- Strategies to communicate qualitative research findings at different levels (communication, dissemination, exploitation, community outreach...)
Requirements
Candidates should have demonstrated interest in global health and/or qualitative research and an undergraduate degree in a related field.
