The Documentary “Where the Roads End” Will be Broadcast by TV3 on June 7

The film tells the story of Oriol Mitjà and his fight against Yaws disease from the island of Lihir, in Papua New Guinea

03.06.2016

After the stirring preview of “Where the Roads End”, the documentary will be broadcast on television next 7 June at 9:55pm by TV3´s Sense Ficció program.

The documentary tells the story of Oriol Mitjà, doctor and researcher at the Barcelona Institute of Global Health (ISGlobal), who travelled to the island of Lihir in Papua New Guinea. There he made a key medical discovery: a simple and cheap treatment can wipe out Yaws, a skin disease that mainly affects children in Africa and the Pacific region. The documentary owes its title to an old African proverb: “yaws starts where the roads end”.

After three years of intense work, Dr. Mitjà demonstrated for the first time that an antibiotic commonly used in western countries was effective in fighting against this neglected tropical disease. Based on this discovery, the WHO has established a plan to eliminate the disease that affects more than 40 million people across the world. If it works, it will be the second disease, after smallpox, to be eradicated from the face of the Earth.

The film was made by Broadcaster and coproduced by TV3 and Televisión Española with the support of the “la Caixa” Foundation,
