Applications Open for "la Caixa" Doctoral INPhINIT Incoming Fellowships at ISGlobal

The “la Caixa” Foundation has launched a new call for applications for the INPhINIT Incoming PhD fellowships. This initiative offers a total of 30 fellowships to researchers of any nationality who wish to pursue a PhD in STEM disciplines - science, technology, engineering, mathematics and health sciences - at research centres of excellence in Spain and Portugal. ISGlobal, as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence and member of the CERCA programme of the Generalitat de Catalunya, is one of the host institutions for the programme.

These grants, with a maximum duration of four years, are designed to support outstanding scientific talent and promote innovative research. Recipients will be able to carry out their doctoral research in one of the Spanish centres awarded the Severo Ochoa or María de Maeztu Prizes, Carlos III Health Research Institutes, or in Portuguese centres recognised as excellent by the Fundação per a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Foundation for Science and Technology). In addition to financial support covering labour costs, research costs and doctoral tuition fees, the programme offers training in transversal skills.

Fellows will have the opportunity to join one of the research groups in the centre’s five research programmes:

• Global Viral and Bacterial Infections Programme: aims to improve understanding of the pathophysiology and immunity of viral and bacterial infections in vulnerable populations, and to develop tools for detection, diagnosis, treatment and clinical management.
• Climate, Air Pollution, Nature and Urban Health Programme: strives to strengthen the scientific evidence on the health effects of climate change and urban pollution, and to assess the health co-benefits of climate action.
• Environment and Health over the Lifecourse Programme: focuses on improving knowledge of the causes and mechanisms of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), focusing on environmental, radiological, occupational, lifestyle, infectious and genetic risk factors.
• Malaria and Neglected Parasitic Diseases Programme: works to advance scientific understanding of the major parasitic diseases and to support policy formulation for the reduction of malaria and other parasitic diseases.
• Maternal, Child and Reproductive Health Programme: aims to develop and validate clinical and community-based interventions for the most common health problems of women and children in low- and middle-income countries.

To pursue a PhD in one of ISGlobal's programmes, interested candidates are invited to contact directly the Principal Investigator of the research line of interest.

The selection process for the INPhINIT Incoming Fellowships will be carried out by the 'la Caixa' Foundation and candidates must submit their application by 23 January 2025. The list of selected fellows will be published on the la Caixa Foundation website on 6 June 2025.
