Umama completed her Bachelor's and Master's of Philosophy in Microbiology at the University of Peshawar, Pakistan. Her research background revolved around antibiotic resistance and the genetic elements responsible for it. She later worked as a microbiologist in a pharmaceutical industry in Peshawar. She then worked as a research assistant conducting research on various projects at the Precision Medicine Lab, Peshawar. She then joined Peshawar Institute of Cardiology as a Research Analyst, a public sector hospital providing latest treatment facilities to cardiac patients in Peshawar. She joined ISGlobal as a predoctoral fellow under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions project BREAK through funded by the European Union. The project aims to assess the activity of small molecules against a collection of well-defined clinical isolates. Its objective is to identify promising candidates with potent antibacterial activity, particularly against biofilm-forming bacteria.
