In sub-Saharan Africa, newborns face a high risk of severe illness and mortality, yet current methods for assessing infection severity often fall short, leading to misclassification and delayed care. The EU-funded ACROBAT Newborns project addresses this gap with the newly developed B-Triage, a rapid, point-of-care test that measures sTREM-1, a reliable biomarker for sepsis. This device provides a precise, independent prediction of illness severity across a range of conditions, helping prioritise care for the most vulnerable. The project will conduct clinical studies in Ethiopia, Gabon, Mozambique and Uganda, advancing B-Triage’s validation, industrialisation and market introduction in Africa. By improving healthcare resources, this innovation is aimed at improving survival rates and treatment outcomes for newborns.
